So you say you're different. Not like them. Growing up, in school and in college you could never fit in. You always had that something in you that kept you apart. What you liked, what you preferred, was never mainstream. And you were proud of it. So proud that you based your entire existence on that very uniqueness.
Today you still pride yourself on that fact. You listen to Duke Ellington while the guy in the next cubicle listens to Himesh. You talk of Shakespeare and of Fellini. Your superiority is obvious. But only to you.
Because he, the next guy, and the guy next to him have a huge advantage over you. He has accepted his mediocrity. No qualms, no second thoughts. And he works his ass off at his work, at his life. And he fits right in. But you don't. Not because you're superior to him. Because you think you are.
Accept it sonny. You're no different from him. His life is right at par with yours. Better maybe. And guess what. You ain't getting any brownie points for your so called "superiority". You think you know more of the world, more of everything than he does. Doesn't matter. Because at the end of the day, you have to fit in to his world. There's no point in trying to change him. But beware, one day he will change you.
One day you will wake up to realise that the ray of sunlight bathing your room in a warm glow does not bear the call of a brand new day open with possibilities. It's just marks the beginning of another 24 hours. 24 in which you have to wake up and do the same shit he does, among people exactly like him. And you have to do it better. Because, bet your ass boy, he is working away at that mindless bullshit with way more diligence and discipline than you ever can. Because you keep convincing yourself that you should be doing much more than this, that you are capable of greater deeds.
You're not. You are and always will be exactly like him. There is no them. It's all Us.
I sincerely thank all of you for this award. You have no idea how much it means for me to be accepted and loved as a mediocre person. Thank you.

Succumbing to mediocrity? Giving up so soon? :)
The world is, and will always be the way we see it, and the way we see ourselves in it. At least, I'd like to believe so! Love the sentiment in your writing though. :)
